Fugro in the Antarctic

Fugro Airborne Surveys – Perth and Fugro-LCT Inc. of Houston have recently completed participation in an airborne geophysical survey conducted as a part of the Prince Charles Mountains Expedition of Germany-Australia (PCMEGA) for the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). The survey area consisted of approximately 25,000 line kilometers covering the southern Prince Charles Mountains in the Australian Antarctic Territory.

The primary objective of the project was to use an ice-penetrating radar system (provided by BGR of Hannover, Germany) to provide, first ever, ice thickness and topographical terrain modeling information of the southern Prince Charles Mountains. Airborne gravimetric and magnetic data were added to complement the data in hopes of giving the geologist, geophysicist, and glaciologists of the AAD valuable insight into geological and glaciological histories of the region.

The ice-penetrating radar, magnetic, and gravimetric systems were installed in a DeHaviland DHC6-300 Twin Otter operated by Kenn Borek Air, Ltd. Of Calgary, Canada. The operation is based at a camp near Mount Cresswell about 150 kilometers northwest of the survey area.
